Second Screen Murder

DSTV Oscar Pistorius Trial

Oscar Pistorius Trial Data Visualisation App.

Since I turned down a job early in my career to do graphics at a TV station, I was excited to get an opportunity to do a datviz project on TV.

The Oscar Pistorius Trial was one of the biggest media events in South Africa ever. A celebrity murder that shocked the nation. Africa's biggest satellite TV network, DSTV, had created a channel specifically for the trial. And the cient was looking to do something, they didn't know what, to augment the channel.

My solution was a device, and platform agnostic, application visualising social media data, that would not only serve as a second screen experience, but would be a working research tool for journalists and as well as used as live graphic visualisations for the TV station.

Data was pulled from a number of social listening tools, and collated and mashed, to give a user-friendly, live view of what was happening in the trial and in the social media space.

The data visualisations were also built so that any media outlet could use or their website as well as the ability to be output as static visualisations for print media - and thus garnering tonnes of free media and credibility for the TV channel.

The visualations were cross platform, desktop, tablet, mobile, and broadcast ready as shown here with my very bad secret mobile snaps live from the TV studio.
